This is a serie of whiskies produced from ONE cask selected by the community
of Distillery Managers at their semi annual 'get-to-gether-parties. All participating
managers brings with them one sample of what they consider best and ready for
drinking from their respective stock. The whiskies are blind tasted and a winner
apointed. The winning one is bottled and each manager is given a bottle.
The whisky is not intended for general availability but surfaces now and then
at auctions.
I believe that there soon will be a Release 6, but I don't
yet have details of what that one will include.
WOOD VERSIONS
Most distilleries uses Bourbon casks (made from American oak, e.g. Quercus
alba) to mature the MAJORITY of their whisky. Others uses Sherry casks from
the different sherry styles (of which Olorosa is one, Manzanilla, Fino and
Palo Cortado, Amontillado are others) to mature the MAJORITY of their whisky.
Only two distilleries are declared 100% mono cask users; Glenmorangie
(Bourbon) and Macallan (Sherry, Olorosa type).
Note: All sherry casks are always made from American oak (Quercus alba)
EXCEPT for the sherry type 'Olorosa'. These casks are made from Spanish
oak (Quercus falcata).
Some distilleries experiment with different types of casks hence producing
whisky that clearly differ from their recognized 'house-style'. Lately, a
fashion of 'finishing off' the whisky have emerged. Meaning the whisky
spend the major part of the maturing cycle in casks common to the 'house
style' but is later 'racked' e.g. moved to different type of casks. The
'finishing' period may last from 6 to 36 months, or longer. In both
cases the whisky is affected in such a way that it distinctly deviates
from the recognised 'house-style'.
If nothing is stated then it is distilleries own bottlings, not IB's
